Sofitel St James London Hotel

‘With Kohler Sok infinity baths and chromotherapy aplenty, needless to say I was already feeling my worries disappear…’

We reckon the closest thing to drifting off on a deckchair somewhere on a remote Caribbean island is a drop in to the Sofitel St James Hotel spa. Set in the regal surroundings of Pall Mall and just a quick stroll away from Trafalgar Square and Regent Street, the Sofitel Hotel is not only a Grade II listed building but is also owned by the Crown Estate, no less. You can’t miss the building from the exterior, it’s a palatial sight, marble pillars floodlit in a silver hue. Inside the opulence continues, with a private hamam with a central heated marble treatment bed and Kohler Sok infinity baths with chromotherapy aplenty, needless to say I was already feeling my worries disappear.

With one of the most prestigious hotel addresses in London, you can rely on a SO spa massage to leave you in good hands (pun very much intended). On arrival I am offered a look at the spa ‘menu’, inspired by two French cosmetology brands, Cinq Mondes and Carita. Cinq Mondes offers French refinement and reflexology knowledge and Carita specialises in Pro-Lift technology that is perfect for its anti-ageing wonders. The À La Carte menu takes me through a gastronomy inspired treatment list (mmm food) of Starters, Revisted Classics and Express Treatments, like the ‘So Rejuvenating facial’ and the ‘So Exhilarating’ massage to name but a few. Distributed over three floors, the spa fuses old and new with an elegant oak staircase, rose coloured marble walls and intricately detailed decorative ceilings. And that’s just the surroundings.

I wanted something all encompassing to help me completely unwind so the In-Deep Relaxing Massage seemed it would do the trick. And it did. A full body massage designed to deeply relax muscle tissue, improve circulation and relieve tension, it did exactly what it claimed, leaving me feeling light as a feather. My masseuse worked deep into the tissue on my back and neck, relieving any internal knots and stresses. While this was a firm and thorough massage, for me it was the perfect balance between function and relaxation.

With five So Well treatment rooms featuring signature MyBed™ massage tables and a duo room for you and your special buddy, there is plenty of space in the lavish surroundings to completely de-stress. But next time: the ‘Pint and Pedicure’. Thirty minutes, £50, and a heck of a good feet soaking along with a pint of your favourite beer. Sorted.

Verdict: ‘A body experience in fantastic surroundings’
Price: In-Deep Relaxing Massage £95 for 60 minutes or £130 for 90 minutes
