So SPA at Sofitel St James/Balinese Massage

“calm, rythmic and relaxing”

In the heart of central London The Sofitel St James is one of the world’s most luxurious, yet understated hotels. What you might not be aware of, is that at it’s heart is So SPA by Sofitel, one of the capitals most magnificent day spas. Designed over three floors, the original grade II listed building features high ceilings and natural daylight, providing the most spectacular and masculine environment in which to unwind. It really is an escape from the city.

Here at The Grooming Guide we liked the fact that a spa butler was on hand to guide us through our unique and personalised spa journey. One quirky touch was the spa menu which is inspired by gastronomy. This means that each client can choose from starters, mains or desserts and even combine specials with signature treatments, to create their own menu. I was initially tempted by the “Pint and Pedicure” treatment but decided to explore the benefits of a massage instead.

My chosen treatment was closely inspired by Balinese ritual, in which a relaxing massage with Baume Fondant aux Noix Tropicales, was combined with the benefits of traditional gentle pulling, and smoothing movements. This was just what I needed after a busy and tense day, I was soon feeling waves of relaxation flood over me. Specially commissioned music really enhanced my experience – no whale music here! What I really appreciated was that my therapist Brendan played things just right in terms of communication. Once he had found out what pressure I needed and which oil I wanted to choose he stayed silent, and let the traditional rythmic Balinese movements do the talking. In just 60 short minutes he had ensured that I was relaxed, revived and ready for the night ahead.
