‘Grow a beard or tache…no way! I’ve got more hairs on my big toe!’
With his affable good looks and cutting sense of humour, Vernon Kay first dropped onto our radar when he was scouted as a model, and he’s been on our screens ever since. With regular gigs at E4 and ITV, as well as hosting BBC2’s Top of The Pops Plus, Vernon has been known for his brit-boy good looks and that conversational charm.
Now with new show ‘1000 Heartbeats’, weekdays at 4pm on ITV, he’s now sporting a polished look that suits his dapper styling. We managed to catch up with him for a quick chat to discuss how he achieves his head to toe grooming guidelines.
Interview: Nick Cox with contributions from Zoe Keys
What’s your current go-to fragrance?
I don’t usually wear an aftershave and I use an unscented deodorant, but we went to an hotel that had Bvlgari miniatures in the shower, and lets just say that I ‘procured’ a few bottles! Then, when I got Bvlgari Black for Christmas I liked that too and it’s stuck with me.
Do you ever feel any pressure to look good?
When magazines publish their favourite do’s and don’ts of style and grooming there’s always going to be an incentive to look good, so if I’m heading out it’s all bells and whistles. As a rule I’m a big fan of relaxed style though. Clothes-wise I’m a fan of shorts, tracksuits and trainers and when it comes to grooming I like it to be no frills; but before you ask I don’t mean like Wayne and Waynetta!
So you’re getting ready for that big night out: what’s the routine?
I take my time: I’ll shower…slowly, then shave. I always make sure to moisturise and maybe I’ll even add a bit of colour on the cheeks from the Mrs’ cupboard! Then its suit, shirt and tie and I’m ready to go.
So what are the grooming products that work for you?
Several. There’s Kiehl’s shave cream which is fantastic, and Kiehl’s moisturiser for men does what it says on the tin without bringing me out in spots.
Have you ever been a beard or ‘tache man?
Nope.. I’ve got more hairs on my big toe than I do on my chin!
Who keeps your hair looking tip top?
Harry from my local hairdressers (down the village) is currently trusted with that task, and as far as styling goes I’m not too fussy – I’ll just use a wax or paste for my hair, whichever is at hand.
What about wet shaves?
Although I’ve never had a traditional wet shave, I do my best to achieve the same effect at home. I use a regular razor, but I’ll recreate the process of steaming to open up the pores.
Have you ever had any grooming disasters?
I’ve started to get a shaving rash, so if anyone else is having the same experience I’d recommend a post shave oil, they really work!
