‘I’m a very picky slag when it comes to scents’
You will recognise dapper Toby Stephens as the villainous and very English megalomaniac Gustav Graves in ‘Die Another Day’ and in his recent role as Captain Flint in pirate epic Black Sails. But it’s Mr Stephens’ latest role as security officer Glen ‘Bub’ Doherty that really has us intrigued.
Watch this space for a release date of Michael Bay’s tense portrayal of the events surround the attacks on The US Diplomatic compound in Benghazi. When it comes to looking good and feeling great both on and off screen Toby is our current go to guy for all things grooming. Read on for his tips on keeping it clean, getting grimy and being bearded. Thanks Toby!
You trained at LAMDA, was there a ‘LAMDA look’?
Students at LAMDA back when I was there were smelly and very scruffy. You wouldn’t want to aspire to any of them…things maybe different now though?!
Pirates are not well known for their grooming habits, was it difficult to get dirty?
Well, filming Black Sails, I’m covered head to toe in grime ‘make up grime’ but grime nonetheless. It did make life difficult looking like the type of smelly vagrant that one steers well clear of, when they loom towards you in the street. The fact that I shower and ablute myself fastidiously in my real life was irrelevant.
In character as Captain Flint your sport a debonair beard and moustache, how did you keep them under control?
I never saw myself as the beardy type but it’s grown on me, ha ha, I like beards! I don’t rub oil or wax into mine but I do make sure to trim it regularly.
You’re not alone..do you think we’ve reached peak beard?
Inevitably the tide will turn and everyone will shave them off. What I find ironic is the lopsided nature of the modern metro-sexual approach to pubic hair: we grow it on our faces in great profusion, but then do everything we can to eradicate it from any other nook and cranny.
Do you have a daily grooming regime and are there particular products that you can’t live without?
I love Aesop products. They are fantastic. In particular I employ their Fabulous Face Oil, Face Moisturising Cream SF 15, the Moisturizing Body Balm, Hair Balm and their Deodorant. For the bath I use Santa Maria Novella Bath Salts.
What fragrance or fragrances do you wear regularly? Are you monogamous or more of an olfactory swinger?
Actually I’m a very picky slag when it comes to scents; I like lots of options but they have to be very good. The products I wear are Carner Cuirs, Angela Flanders Oudh, Commes des Garçon Standard, and Commes des Garçon Kyoto.
You play plenty of physical roles, how do you keep fit for them?
I work out five times a week. Mostly Gym Jones style, which is brutal! I’m much more interested in being fit however, than in having some ‘body Nazi’ aesthetic!
James Bond is incredibly well groomed, did Pierce Brosnan give you any grooming tips in Die Another Day?
Pierce was incredibly secretive about his grooming habits and also the secret of his youthful appearance; but I suspect he went to a very expensive clinic in Gstaad.
How do you do you unwind and relax after the stresses of acting in intense scenes?
I unwind by taking a very long bath and then reading a book in bed.
