Tidiou Portrait - Mark Kean

Tidiou M’Baye

‘Perfect? No… but I try to make an effort!’

Recently London born Tidiou M’Baye has seemed unstoppable! This talented 21 year old has not only fronted campaigns for the likes of Tommy Hilfiger (where he showed us his impressive dancing skills), John Smedley, and Stone Island. He’s also modeled alongside his brother Sacha (who recommended him to Select), so you could say that good genes run in the family.

2013 saw him walk on some of the biggest runways in fashion from Christopher Raeburn to Calvin Klien and Versace. As well as being photographed by Paul Smith for GQ, he has shot for magazines including Attitude, i-D and Wonderland to name but a few. Tidiou sat down with us to show that there’s more to a man than just the model…. including a keen interest in chess and his love of Ribena!

As a model, do you have to be particularly careful with your skin/hair?
As a model you should take care of your skin and hair, as should everyone. It’s healthy, and having nice creamed skin and a sexy hair cut makes most people feel good and more confident. But most importantly for men it makes us presentable, as every man should be.

Do you have a grooming routine?
Well I guess you could call it a routine. I wake up; have a shower, brush my teeth, then cream myself (as wrong as that sounds) with Ducray ICTYANE. If my hair is in afro-ish mode ill grab the comb and then the most important part, I grab a Ribena.

How do you style your hair?
Well when it’s long an afro-comb and when its short my hands.

Have you ever had long locks?
Yes once when I lived in Africa and it was a full blown afro. As for the products I was offered to used back then…well water and soap.

Which products work best on your skin?
Well my favourites are Ducray ICTYANE and Coco Butter as I’ve been using them ever since I can remember.

So tell us..what’s in your wash bag?
Well I have a tooth brush, cream, Dove mini body wash, and shaving kit.

Have you had any grooming disasters?
Fortunately I can’t say I have.

Do you have a signature scent?
That’s a hard one, I’ve got a few for different occasions. ‘Joop! Homme Wild‘ for when I’m in the smart casual mood, then the David Beckham ‘Intimately Beckham’ when I’m dressing smart, are two of my favourites.

Which other guys inspire you in terms of their grooming?
Well as for models most of the ones I know have it right, but in general I must say Will Smith.

As a male model, do you always feel the pressure to look well groomed?
Perfect no, but I try make an effort.

What do you like to do when you’re not busy modelling?
Well chess is my passion so when I’m not modelling I’m playing.

When and where are you happiest?
In a small village called Entrevaux in the mountains of south of France and as for when that can be anytime of the year.
