‘I can’t grow a beard…trust me, I’ve tried!’
Devon native Sam Way is currently at the top of his game! Not only is he producing new music regularly he is also signed to Models 1, and works on prestigious campaigns for the likes of Tommy Hilfiger, Paco Rabanne, Chanel, Dolce and Gabbana.
Here at Grooming Towers we have long been intrigued by Mr Way. How does he balance a rock and roll lifestyle with a hectic schedule, and yet still manages to look great?. Well now we know..simply read on for the inside track on horse hair moustaches, DIY body butter and the joys of faking it. Thanks for dropping by Sam!
So how does Mr Way start the day?
I love it when you call me that (wink) but you can call me Sam. (grins) Well I get up (rising half an hour past my alarm) and take to my yoga mat for half an hour. There’s nothing better for my circulation, skin, mood, and entire body/mind than waking up with a present physical practice. If that doesn’t happen I’ll always make a cold pressed juice with vegetables and one apple to sweeten it up a little. Cold pressing veg and fruit means your drinking structured water (living water) which is different from regular water—H3O2 rather than H2O. It’s healing and hydrating at the same time. My Hurom juicer gets a daily workout. It’s self-care and maintenance from the inside out.
What propelled you into the world of music and how do you balance this with your modelling assignments?
If life is just one big plate spinning act, then being aware of where I place my attention is key to finding that balance. Sometimes I have it, and sometimes I don’t. I stumbled into music pretty late, and started writing songs because I needed to find a space to air some of my emotions, stories, thoughts and feelings. The creative impulse is what keeps pushing me and driving me and I just want to follow it as far as it goes.
Would you ever join the beard gang? Have we reached ‘peak beard’?
I’m going to tell you a closely guarded secret. I can’t grow a beard, I’ve tried, trust me. In Movember I looked like I just hadn’t washed. During the Dolce show in Milan a few years back they actually made me a rash, by pritt-sticking horse hair to my upper lip! It was a look…not one I will be sporting anytime soon. LOL!
What is your go to scent for day and for night?
For the long summer days, (and I’m hoping we get some more of these in London) something like Clinique Happy is cool and crisp with a hit of Citrus. In the evenings I’m currently wearing Castle Forbes, a fragrance from a little known estate in Aberdeenshire, boasting a rich Amber and Vanilla base with Pine and Herbal-Green top notes. It’s perfectly balanced, with a hint of Spice.
So what’s in your wash bag?
Haeckles Eco Marine Extract Facial Cream is the best all-around and all natural moisturiser I’ve ever had, Sure For Men Roll-On Anti-Perspirant is a must, Non Fluoride Aloe Vera Whitening Toothpaste, Nivea Sensitive Shaving Gel and my homemade Body Butter.
Touring is a big part of a musicians life, which essential products help you to stay fresh and help you look your best for every show?
To be honest touring can be as exhausting as it is exhilarating. I always make sure I’m clean shaven and pack essentials like Boots Essentials Moisturising Cream – I add a few drops of essential oils to mine – and hair products like Fudge’s Salt Spray and Gatsby’s Grunge Matte Wax. Staying moisturised and hydrated when travelling can be hard, as is dealing with any random spots that always comes at the most annoying time.
Which other men (real or fictional) have inspired your style and grooming?
Young Marlon Brando and James Bond, both for their effortless masculine style.
As a model, you have to look your best more than most men, do you have any skincare tips you could share?
Make your own body butter, melt Coconut Oil with pure Shea Butter, 50/50 is a good mix, and then add 10-15 drops of some essential oils. I use Frankincense and Myrrh. Post workout and after a shower just take some into your palm and use it all over your body and especially around your shoulders and neck. Leave it to soak in, and prepare to feel like an athenian god!
Be honest, have you ever had any grooming disasters?
Well I’ve had my lip cut open on set by the hair and make-up girl. She was trying to clean up some stray hairs. I spent the rest of the day dabbing my lips with bloody tissue paper in-between shots. Rock and Roll!
Do you spa or have skincare treatments?
A good massage and a sauna will always make me feel amazing. One of my favourite spa spots is in the Kings Cross St Pancras hotel. If I’m treating myself, that’s where I’ll head too.
Where and with who are you happiest?
On a beach, playing a guitar, drinking a beer with my loved ones. Thank you guys @The Grooming Guide. I enjoyed your questions and I hope you found this entertaining. It was a pleasure to write. Let me know if you end up using some of my tricks and tips and tag me @iamsamway.
