‘I doubt I could put up with a long beard and clay getting stuck in it’
Modelling and pottery making wouldn’t seem like the perfect fit…until you meet Ryan Barrett that is. With a degree in Fine Art and signed to Models 1, Barrett has a dual passion which has driven him to success in both fields.
Despite his stellar assignments for the likes of Versace and Dolce and Gabbana, Ryan hasn’t forgotten his love for art. He also finds the time to work on his photography and hell, he even won the Great Pottery Throwdown this year. Despite his busy schedule, we are happy that Mr Barrett dropped by at grooming HQ to share his style secrets.
Modelling and pottery making is an interesting mix. How did you get involved in both areas and in which way does each give you satisfaction?
I was on the move from Ipswich to London (to study Fine Art at Goldsmiths) when I was scouted for modelling, since then my journey as a model has always involved visiting inspiring countries. Plus I’m a creative person so I always consider different creative processes and mediums, photography, sculpture, painting and lately ceramics.
Your hands must take a real beating from using clay. Which products help to keep your hands in great condition? Do you ever have manicures?
Yes, clay draws the moisture out from my hands and makes them very dry, so I use a hand moisturiser constantly, it’s from Kiehl’s, and works great.
What’s your daily grooming routine?
In the mornings I normally use a organic tea tree moisturiser or a SPF from Kiehl’s. I have thick hair which needs taming down, so in the early hours I use a Bumble&Bumble spray and a little wax to keep it in place.
Bath or shower and with which products?
I never have time for a relaxing bath these days, so I always shower. Pure Castile Soap is my go to product, I love them all and each month I buy a different one.
What’s your go to scent? Are you loyal or promiscuous?
I tend to go for light fresh scents nothing too rich, a current favourite is Versace Pour Homme.
Which fragrance do you appreciate on others?
Great question… I love a sweet smell but I think it also depends on the person’s personality too.
What’s in your washbag?
I have a mini Wahls Beard Trimmer which I take everywhere to manage my stubble, Dax Wax, Travel Size Pure Castile Soap, Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil, SPF Moisturiser.
As an artist and model there must be pressure to be on point with your grooming… be honest have you ever had any disasters?
Definitely as a model you need to be on form, presentable and looking your best. I once had a John Galliano show and they had heavy makeup and loads of hair products and straight after the show I had to run to another show which was a totally different look. The make-up team there were not happy and took hours to remove the products, I felt guilty but there was nothing I could do.
Would you ever consider joining the beard gang or would that get in the way of your pottery making?
Hahaha there is an element of health and safety on the pottery wheel, but I doubt I could put up with a long beard and clay getting stuck in it.
Which character (alive or fictional) inspires you in regards to your grooming and style?
Johnny Bravo?! I love his big quiff.
As a model do you have any grooming tips to impart to our readers?
For great skin, keep it clean and moisturised and keep hydrated drinking lots of fluids really is the key.
Is there one product you can’t live without?
Keihl’s Midnight Recovery Oil, I love it!
Where are you happiest?
I am happiest in my studio potting away and being creative but if not that I would say being in Japan. It’s one of my fave places EVER!
