‘Try new products…..you never know what you’ll find!’
Blogger and television presenter Prince Cassius is a firm fixture on the fashion front row and in GQ’s first annual Britain’s Best Dressed Man Competition, but did you know that he actually grew up in civil war-torn Somalia before escaping for a stylish life in south-west London?
He may be famous for stopping traffic with his trademark afro, but here at The Grooming Guide we know Cassius for his no nonsense approach to grooming! So Prince Cassius we salute you for sharing your grooming tips and spilling the beans on your favourite lotions and potions, thanks!
What is the secret to keeping your iconic hair under control?
It’s pretty much knowing what works for you and how to style it. Styling is very important. People always ask me what I use or compliment the style. But I just tell them ‘You have to study your hair’. I know what works for me and what doesn’t but before this I had to use so many different hair sprays to see what works on afro hair. Some were too strong, some didn’t hold, some left white bits and so on.
We’ve heard that you’ve never been to an hairdresser, why is this?
True, although I have walked into a few with my brothers and sisters. My mother has always been styling and cutting my hair since a young boy so I’ve never trusted anyone else. Over time I’ve learnt how to style, groom and maintain it myself.
Do you have a signature fragrance?
Yes- Paco Rabanne, One Million.
Who are your grooming icons?
In no particular order…Jamie Foxx, Simon Cowell and Eddie Murphy!
Which grooming products could you not live without?
My hairspray and sheen spray of course, Motions Sheen Spray (I live for) Tresemme Hairspray Extra Hold and Freeze Hold.
Do you prefer a refreshing shower or a relaxing bath?
It depends, usually a quick shower during the week and a relaxing bath at weekends.
What products do you keep in your washbag?
My homemade Honey Body Scrub and Johnson’s Baby Oil and Baby Shampoo.
How long do you spend on grooming every day?
I spend 30 mins every morning doing my hair and 10 mins on my face. As long as my fro looks perfect I’m 100% happy!
Would you say you’re high maintenance?
Not at all. People do assume this but actually I’m the opposite. My hair can take time but generally I’m a very laid back and happy-go-lucky kinda guy.
Is there a lot of pressure on you to look your best all the time since you were voted fashion icon of the year?
There’s always peer pressure in fashion. But to be honest I go with how I feel and tend to please myself rather than showcase myself for other people.
What is the best bit of grooming advice you’ve been given?
All my family have really good skin and people always ask what we use but it’s simple ‘Homemade Avocado and Honey’ on our face once a week. It leaves my face glowing and very soft.
Have you ever had a grooming disaster?
Yes. I tried colouring my hair alone at home blonde and it turned out ginger. Let’s just say it was winter so I ended up wearing lots of hats.
Which products would you recommend especially for black skin?
Motions Sheen Spray is amazing for any type of hair. It smells amazing and doesn’t leave hair oily. Pink Lotion is also amazing! Also if going out for a night out add some water onto your skin the some Johnson’s Baby Oil leaves my skin shiny and glowing.
Do you suffer from ingrowing hairs, if so how do you combat this?
Sometimes they are a problem on my neck, because I tend to shave there. I haven’t found a solution yet but TCP tends to smooth and calms, oh and investing in a good shaver works wonders.
Has your choice in grooming products become more sophisticated as you’ve got older?
Absolutely, my taste and smell has changed and I’ve been attracted to more quality products than before (where I’d use any fragrance, for example). Change is good and it’s good to try new products; you never know what you’ll find!
