‘Protecting my face from the sun is vital!”
Oscar Pistorius is an exceptional athlete whose aim is to bridge the gap between disabled and non-disabled sport, and his sights are firmly set on a medal in the 2012 Olympics! Known as the ‘Blade Runner’ Oscar competes with the aid of carbon fibre transtibial limbs and holds the world record in the 100, 200 and 400 metres (sport class T44) events. It seems that a double amputation whilst still an infant, has done little to deter the ambition of this extraordinary South African sprint runner.
Pistorius took part in his first international competitions for able-bodied athletes in 2007, and his transitional blades were scientifically proven to not give him a net advantage over able-bodied athletes soon after. The recent recipient of the 2012 Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award Oscar achieved a 400 m time of 45.07 on July 19, 2011, thereby reaching the “A” qualifying standard for both the 2011 World Championships and 2012 Olympics. His dreams are now within reach.

What does being well groomed mean to you?
It shows that you have pride in the way you feel and care about the way people perceive you. I think it’s important for men to be presentable and neat.
As a sportsman you need to take care of your body, do you take care of your face and your hands?
I do. Often we spend time practicing starts on the track, the surface is rough and can often damage the skin on your hands. Using hand cream and protecting my face from the sun is vital.
Do you have a daily grooming routine?
I usually shower as I wake up to get my day going, after my morning gym session I usually have an ice bath or shower again. We have training on the track in the afternoon and it’s pretty much the same after we have finished up there. I shave when I have to but make sure my face is always clean.
Do you have a shaving routine?
If it’s long I attack it first with an electric razor and then use a blade and smooth it out!
Do you have a signature aftershave?
I use A*Men by Thierry Mugler, the scent is one of my favourites and I like it for its freshness and invigorating feel on the skin.
What hair product do you use and why?
My hair is short so I don’t often but if I do I use a dry matt wax. It’s easy to texture and isn’t too oily.
What skin product do you use and why?
I mostly use ClarinsMen products. They have so many good products for different times of the day (Active Face Wash, Active Hand Cream, Super Moisture Gel…). Sometimes depending where I am, my skin gets dry; so it’s nice to have something that can balance it out without making it oily.
What product do you use in the bath/ shower?
I just use shower gel: A*Men Hair and Body Shampoo. It is very gentle and scents my skin with the elegant fragrance of A*Men. And if I’m in the bath, throw salts in it for relaxation.
How do you clean up after a race?
After a race I try to have an ice bath for recovery. In some of the Mediterranean countries we run in it can get very humid so it’s nice to spend time just cooling off after an event.
Are there any guys in the public eye do you think are well groomed?
There are many that are conscious of their appearance, I really think that men are becoming more educated as to how to look after themselves and their skin.
