Olly Barkley

Olly Barkley was born in London’s Hammersmith and is an English Rugby Union player for Bath and England. At only 19 he made his début for England during the summer tour to North America in 2001. In search of a new challenge, Barkley joined Gloucester Rugby in July 2008 on a two year contract after 6 years at Bath. After one season with rivals Gloucester, Olly Barkley returned to Bath Rugby at the end of the 2008/09 campaign.

The prolific Barkley became a firm favourite during his initial eight-year spell at Bath, scoring 1,697 points in 180 matches and earning a reputation as one of the finest playmakers in the Guinness Premiership. Since returning to the Club, his points tally has risen to just under 2,000 points by the end of the 2010/11 season. Capped by England before he had made his senior debut for Bath, Barkley has won 23 caps for his country, playing at both fly-half and inside centre. Here the talented Mr Barkley shares his tips on keeping clean when life gets dirty!

As a sportsman you obviously need to take care of your body, do you do the same for your face?
My Mum always use to put face cream on us morning and night as kids and it’s stuck
right through to now. I’m an avid moisturiser!

Talk us through your daily grooming routine?
We tend to be in the gym around 7.30am so it doesn’t make sense to spend too much time on morning grooming. I’ll generally just moisturise after showering and maybe use a face scrub a couple of times a week.

How do you keep your hair tamed?
I really like the Vitaman moisturising conditioner and shampoo and then if I’m going out for anything important then I’ll use their Matt Mud.

Do you have any favourite skincare products?
I’ve always used the Clinique M Gel in the past, more recently I’ve tried the Vitaman’s face moisturiser which is also good.

What do you use to get in a lather?
Whatever I can get my hands on usually, I’m not to fussy in the shower as I am usually trying to get out as quickly as possible to get to a meeting or see my family.

How do you clean up after a match?
I’ve just started using Vitaman’s Sea Salt Body Scrub as it’s great for cleaning the mud out of any scratches and scrapes I pick up from a game. It’s really important for us as you don’t clean any exposed wounds straight away so they can become infected. The scrub is great for this.

Do you use aftershave?
Nope, it dries my skin. I keep fresh after shaving with a splash of really cold water followed by some moisturiser.

How do you like to smell?
Of Clinique Happy in the summer and Issey Miyake in the Winter. I love the freshness of Happy and the warmth of Issey Miyake. Plus, it’s always available in club toilets so you dont end up smelling of a turkish bath!

What does being well groomed mean to you?
Feeling good and delaying the signs of ageing!

Are there any guys in the public eye do you think are well groomed?
David Beckham is probably the main man when it comes to grooming. Always well turned out and looks the part. Not sure if that’s him or Posh though!
