‘radiant skin can make a real impact’
Esteemed actor Oliver Thornton has performed in some of the West End’s most reputable productions including ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’, ‘Rent’, ‘Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Starlight Express’, ‘Les Miserables’, and ‘Chicago’. His most recent portrayal of Adam/Felicia in ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ won him both ‘What’s on Stage’ and ‘Broadway.com’ awards. Oliver has also launched his own blog ‘Design for Living’ which focusses on his love of fashion and interiors. It’s a tool which he uses to showcase his passions, reach beyond the stage and connect with his fan base. Here the dapper Mr Thornton shares with The Grooming Guide his thoughts on looking good and feeling great.
What does looking good and feeling great mean to you?
It’s got to be my skin. When you see someone with even, radiant skin it makes a real impact. Sadly my skin gets a tough time of it. Filthy London air and the years I’ve spent wearing thick make up, under hot lights onstage, mean I have to work extra hard to keep my skin looking healthy.
What are the products you couldn’t live without?
REN Micro Polish Cleanser, a good lip balm, and when I’m being photographed at an event, MAC concealer for the dark circles under my eyes. When it comes to hair, my routine revolves around a good blow dry and a can of TRESemmé Freeze Hold Hairspray
Name a guy that seems to get things right?
I like people with a quirky, natural style when it comes to grooming. Johnny Depp always looks great to me.
Do you have a favourite fragrance?
I’m currently wearing Cornubia by Penhaligon’s. It’s the most amazing powdery, opulent fragrance. When the weather starts to warm up I’ll switch to L’Ombre Dans L’Eau by Diptyque which is robust and floral. I like staying loyal to fragrances. I love it when a person and their scent marry so you link one to the other.
Do you have a particular grooming routine, or look?
No I like to try new hair styles and wearing different outfits, to be adventurous and to have fun! If I’m Im honest this means that I’ve had my fair share of hair disasters, I remember the worst and it involved a banana clip and mohican. I’d love to grow a decent moustache and then I could have hours of fun with that. Sadly I’m follically challenged in that area.
When do you look your best?
I always look better with a soft tan and a good measure of vintage flair in my look. Big quiffs or perfectly groomed 30’s side partings seem to suit me well.
Bath or shower?
Always a bath. I’ll make myself late because I can’t bear to have a shower over a dip. I love REN Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil and Molton Brown Bracing Silverbirch Thermal Muscle Soak.
Are men spending longer looking in the mirror?
Yes they are, I don’t think more men care now it’s just that thankfully it’s not taboo to talk it anymore. Also the male grooming market has grown massively so we now have a greater choice. One of the reasons I started my blog, Design for Living, was to promote the masculine voice when it comes to grooming and fashion. I hope more men find the confidence to take time over their appearance and explore their own sense of style.
