‘There’s nothing better than a long hot shower after a brutal 12 rounds of sparring!’
Having been named as the ‘Sexiest Man in Wales’ we thought at the Grooming Guide it was time to get the inside information on looking great from the man himself. Proving himself to be far more than a pretty face, Matt is not only the presenter of ‘The Hub’ each Friday on ‘This Morning’; he also fronts both the National Lottery programme and Welsh programmes including ‘Hwb’ for S4C.
Away from the small screen, Matt is a sports enthusiast who has run the Flora London Marathon as well as been capped for Wales in Australian Rules Football. As if this wasn’t energetic enough, he is also a rugby enthusiast and amateur boxer.
Physical exertions aside, Matt originally came to attention as a presenter on ‘The Wales Show’ where he met and interviewed faces including Tom Jones, Ricky Gervais and rock legend Slash among others. So when it comes to keeping your cool, who better to ask for advice on looking good than Mr Johnson.
Recently you won your heat on ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’ performing as Freddie Mercury. How did you feel and who else would you like to impersonate in future?
Performing as Freddie Mercury was an absolute blast! He is probably one of the best (if not the best) showmen of all time. So it was an honour to pay tribute to him. It was also amazing to win 10 grand for my charity ‘Mind’. I’d love to have a go at impersonating Axl Rose. It would be tough, but one hell of a laugh!
Do you have a skincare routine? If so, which products do you use?
I keep it simple with the ol’ skin care routine, I use a L’Oreal Men Expert Hydra Face Wash Wake Up Effect in the shower, then I’ll put some Clinique M Lotion to moisturise.
Have you always wanted to be a presenter, or did you have other aims growing up?
I always wanted to be Slash from Guns n Roses! Seriously! I kinda still do! But apart from that I always remember me pretending to read the news like Eamonn Holmes and making videos when I was a kid. I knew that I wanted to work in TV, but I wasn’t sure if it was behind, or in front of the camera.
What are the must have grooming products you can’t live without?
I couldn’t live without my Vo5 Matt Clay for my hair – it keeps my quiff in shape!
As a sports enthusiast, including playing rugby and boxing, how do you freshen up afterwards?
I always shower straight away. There’s nothing better than a long hot shower after a brutal 12 rounds of sparring! I never have baths, I don’t see the point.
Would you ever borrow any products from your other half, and if so which ones?
I’d always steal my ex’s face wipes to clean my watch. I also used to pinch her Creme de la Mer. No way am I paying nearly 200 quid on a cream!
What’s your favourite scent to keep you smelling fresh and fragrant?
I’ve worn Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir for about 6 years now.
Have you ever had a grooming disaster and what happened?
I once tried trimming my chest hair and made a right ol’ mess of it! I went too short too early and pretty much hacked at it until I no longer felt masculine.
Who would be your dream interview and why?
I’ve been very lucky to interview my heroes, Slash and Ricky Gervais, but I would love to have a sit down chat with Beckham. I’d also love to grill Megan Fox (for obvious reasons)!
Who are your style icons and what do you admire about them?
I take a lot of inspiration from classic icons like Elvis, James Dean and Marlon Brando. They all had an incredible masculinity, yet kept their looks very simple. I loved the way that when they were casual, they were cool, and when they were smart they looked like they could cut glass.
