‘I’m amazed that my shower gel has more real lemons in it than the lemonade I drink!’
Romford born rower and MBE winner Mark Hunter is an extraordinary athlete who topped the World Cup series and produced majestic form at the 2008 Olympics by winning GB’s first ever lightweight medal and Olympic gold. Mark and crewmate Zac Purchase dominated the final race to produce an emphatic victory, and look set to produce a similar win at this year’s London Olympic games.
When he has time away from competing and training, Mark is a dedicated fan of West Ham Football Club and is also writing a regular column for the Evening Standard in which he talks about his progress and preparation for the 2012 London games. No doubt aiming to retain his Olympic title, Mark has also been awarded the title ‘Freeman of the River Thames’ and with luck will add a gold medal to his collection this summer.
Have you started to take more care of your appearance?
Yes as it’s become more common and accepted now, most guys spend a fair bit of money looking after themselves….. prevention is better than cure!
As a sportsman you need to take care of your body, do you take care of your face and your hands?
As a rower, no matter what time of the year it is, my skin is always battling the weather. In the winter my hands and face deal with freezing temperatures and get very dry, so I have to moisturise them at least once a day, and in the summer the sun plays its part (I wish more often!) so the same process happens.
Do you have a daily grooming routine?
I’m not very meticulous about it with it so I have no set routine. I do it when I can, but I know I should take a bit more care.
What does your shaving routine consist of?
I prefer to shave while having a shower. I feel it give a better and cleaner shave. I start my routine on one side, work my way to the other, then shave my chin and neck.
Do you have an signature aftershave?
I don’t use any aftershave gel, I’m a cologne type of guy! Right now it’s Givenchy Play.

What skin product do you use and why?
I use Nivea Moisturiser with SPF as I know I should be protecting my face from dangerous rays. It was the first one I tried and I’ve just stuck with it. There are so many products out there promising so many things, I never know how to choose so I just stick with what I know.
What do you keep in your wash bag?
Nivea sunscreen, Asthma Inhalers, Scissors, Dental Floss, Electric tooth brush, Colgate tooth paste, First Defence, Nurofen, Zirtek, Bonjela, Savlon, Plasters, Compeed, King of Shaves Shaving Oil, Gillette Mach 3 razor …….and a spare blade.
How do you freshen up after competing; bath/ shower and what products do you use?
After showering with my lemon shower gel, I use Nivea for Men Hydro Gel, and Neutrogena Hand and Foot Cream.

In the shower I use Original Source Lemon with Tea Tree Shower Gel. It smells nice and feels refreshing. I’m always amazed that my shower gel has more real lemons in it than the lemonade I drink!
