I jump out of the shower with my hair still damp
A self-confessed adrenalin junkie who owns and has driven most of Ferrari’s models, Josh Cartu also trains with Ferrari and AF Corse Italia and is a regular participant in race rallies. As well as racing, Josh has flown a Russian MiG-29 fighter plane out to the very edge of space, performed several high G maneuvers himself (8G’s) and experienced a zero gravity bow. Also a philanthropist, Josh has committed $60,000 to the Tony Hawk Foundation and is currently launching his own racing team, CARTU RACING. Undoubtedly a busy man: how does he keep himself so well-groomed?
You’re a self-confessed adrenaline junkie. How do you refresh your skin after a sweaty car race or a crazy experience?
If I’m at home I take a shower in my Dornbracht Sensory Sky system… it’s a shower with many different modes and three different scent modules.
How do you feel about the beard trend? Do you have any products which are your go-to’s for keeping it in check?
I’m big on the beard trend. I hopped on the wagon two years ago and I’ve kept one ever since. Probably going to be a permanent look for me. For my beard, not so much. I’m not a big fan of a super organized beard because it looks as if you care too much about it. For me, the occasional stray hair and slightly wilder look is more natural and easier to maintain for me. I use a great barber in Milan (the Dolce Gabbana Barbiere) that my friend Max Gervasi introduced me to.
Do you have any tips on how to stay in great shape?
If you’re lazy and don’t want to go to the gym, take all drinks other than water out of your diet, no carbs after 6pm and that alone will make a big change. For me, I need to do high heat training which means sometimes putting an exercise bike in a sauna and training there.
Have you had any grooming disasters?
Whenever I try to do it myself.
Where and when are you at your happiest?
Whenever I’m racing.
Do you have a signature fragrance?
Tom Ford Neroli Portofino but I’m sure many are wearing this fragrance.
Do you have a daily grooming routine?
Jumping out of the shower with hair still damp, I use this spray called L’Oréal Techni Art Spray Thermo Modeling spray. Then I blow-dry it, then use “Super Dust” again from L’Oréal… then a little Air-Fix spray, again from L’Oréal.
Are men paying more attention to their appearance, if so why?
I think so. Aside from the obvious TV and movie personalities, we now have a bunch of social media people to look at. Our phones are full of timelines and streams of other people and most people I’ve seen have heir faces buried in their phones looking mostly at… other people I guess if you do this enough, you start to notice ways to improve your own appearance and style.
What does being ‘well-groomed’ mean to you?
For me it’s not about just looking clean, it’s about actually being clean. I prefer not to look as if I care too much about it. Not just simply because that isn’t my style but because I don’t want to invest too much energy or thought into it either. On the other hand, I care a lot about how I look and I think people who say they don’t are probably not being truthful!
