Jamie Jewitt

‘In modern society men and women are required to look a certain way… I believe that everyone should do what makes them happy!’

Jamie Jewitt’s relationship with grooming is more than skin deep! Despite having shot to widespread popularity with ‘Love Island’ last summer, Jamie Jewitt is no stranger to the camera lens as he has modelled for brands like Calvin Klein and Tom Ford since he was a teenager.

So exactly what are his secrets? How does he maintain those locks and beard to an icon worthy standard?
I met with Jamie over breakfast to find out exactly how he does it, read on…

Thanks for coming today Jamie, how long do you spend on your grooming routine?
No Problem! To be honest, on a day-to-day basis about 30 seconds! Shower, beard oil, deodorant, go. Simple.

How often do you trim your beard?
It varies all the time depending on what I’m doing, where I’m going, who I’m seeing and sometimes, what I’m eating!

Would you ever have a clean shave?
I do like being clean shaven, but I feel more confident with a beard. Besides, I’m not sure people would recognise me without one, it’s sort of my trademark!

What makes you feel more confident?
Feeling fresh and smelling good are definitely my biggest confidence boosters.

You spend a lot of time on the road, which products are always in your wash bag?
I will always take Woody’s Beard Balm with me, as well as L’Oreal Men Expert Fresh Extreme antiperspirant, and my favourite fragrance Black Orchid by Tom Ford. I love this fragrance as I think it smells amazing on both men and women.

Speaking of women, have you ever borrowed any of their products? Be honest!
I can honestly say that I haven’t! I have never used any of my girlfriend’s products as everything I need exists in a men’s products. I also have to confess that I’ve never moisturised in my life, I know that’s really bad!

When did you sign your first modelling contract?
I signed my first modelling contract when I was 15 and then moved to New York at the age of 17 to work. I found it difficult at first with home sickness but it made me workout who I am as an individual.

How did you find New York? Do you prefer it to London?
New York is crazy, it’s like London gone mad with taller buildings and everything packed into such a condensed area, it makes for a real melting pot. I love New York and would tell anyone who asks to go and visit as often as they can, but London will always feel like my home.

Have you noticed more men becoming interested in grooming?
I’m from Essex, so I’ve grown up being surrounded by guys taking pride in their appearance, not wishing to endorse the stereotype too strongly! But yes, I think there has been an increase recently with men improving their grooming routines and taking more pride in their appearance.

What charity work are you involved in… and why?
I strongly believe in getting involved with work relating to mental health to generate conversation surrounding it, as it is so important to get matters out in the open and get more people talking.

You use your position as an influencer to raise awareness for mental health, does this make discussing your own wellbeing any easier?
It never gets easier, you just get better at it which is why it is so important to generate discussion surrounding the topic, anything that I can do to raise awareness of campaigns and mental health issues then I’m game! For example, using my Ted Talk last year to discuss the matter in greater detail and attempt to reach a broader audience.

Do you find there to be a connection between outer grooming and inner mental wellbeing?
I could end up giving you another Ted Talk on this subject! I find that in modern society, particularly in the industries which I work in, men (and women) are required to look a certain way. But I strongly believe that everyone should do what makes them happy, we all deserve to be comfortable in our own skin which has a massive impact on our inner wellbeing.
