Are men paying more attention to their appearance, if so why?
Yeah 100%! It’s no longer acceptable to have ear and nose hair hanging out! Being well groomed is key right now, it’s clear from the number of grooming products and old school barbers that are popping up everywhere.
Does being in public eye makes you more aware of how you look?
Anyone who ends up on TV needs to look sharp as you will open yourself up for criticism on social media if you don’t. I get stick from the lads if I don’t have my hair tight and good clothes on, to be honest looking stylish helps you feel great! It’s like that old saying in sport; look good, play good.
Do you have a daily grooming routine?
I always do the basics; brush my teeth, comb my hair, I use hair products by a company called Pankhurst and I moisturise using Tom Ford Daily Moisturiser. Being a sportsman I shower about 3 times a day so I use a face scrub every couple of days and body wash all the time. I also like to mix things up, currently I rate this product range called Below The Belt Grooming, it’s pretty quirky but the products really work.
How often do you wash shave and with what?
I shave every 2 weeks as I always have a beard or stubble. I also visit an amazing barbers in Shoreditch called Jack the Clipper who do it all: they cut your hair, trim your beard, give you a nasal wax and get rid of unsightly ear hair, as well as offering facials. If all this isn’t quite enough they also throw in a massage….it’s an unreal service.
Do you have a favorite fragrance?
My favourite fragrance is Creed Aventus; I’ve worn it for the last 4 years and I think it’s just amazing! I mix between that and Oud by Acqua di Parma.
Who do you see as ‘well groomed’ in the public eye?
I think obviously David Beckham; he is always outstandingly well groomed, and Tom Ford. I think Daniel Craig also looks very slick, especially when he is in James Bond mode.
What does being well groomed mean to you?
Being well groomed to me is about presenting yourself in the best possible way and maintaining standards, my mother always used to tell me that girls hate dirty finger nails… so pay attention guys!
How do you treat any nasty scars or scrapes?
They are such a nightmare! On scars I like using Bio Oil, and on scrapes and stuff like that I’m pretty relaxed, so I use Iodine or Savlon spray. As you can imagine I spend my life throwing myself into the fray getting cut and scraped.
How do you clean up after a match?
I always like to keep it nice and simple: face wash, body wash, obviously brush and style my hair, add a little moisturiser, throw on some aftershave and boom, there you have it.
Have you had any grooming disasters?
Probably shouldn’t admit this! I actually used one of my ex-girlfriends tan prolonging moisturisers, thinking it was just normal moisturiser, but when I woke up the next day I had a terrific orange tan and of course, this was just before a big England game! I’ve also had some pretty tragic haircuts in my time, I’ve grown some pretty obnoxious facial hair for Movember and to top it all off I’ve had my chest waxed before which left me with the worst rash in the history of the world!
Can you share any secrets on how to stay in shape?
Diet is the key to staying in shape, you want try your best to eat 3 or 4 meals a day, focusing on natural ingredients and avoiding processed carbs; sooner or later you’re body will do some fantastic things. Grooming wise, I think it’s crucial to find a good barber! Have them do your beard and basically take care of everything so that you can be at your very best.
