James DeGale

Harlesden born Olympic gold medalist, James Frederick DeGale MBE started amateur boxing at the age of 10 at the Trojan club before moving to Dale Youth boxing club where he quickly acquired the nickname ‘Chunky’ (as he is known to his fans). DeGale famously represented Great Britain at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Middleweight boxing event. He won the gold medal in a scrappy and bad tempered fight in which the Cuban Emilio Correa was deducted two points for biting his shoulder. DeGale was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2009 New Year Honours. This September he will challenge for the European Super-Middleweight Title in September. Do you think that men are paying more attention to their appearance and if so why?
I do think men take more notice of how they look, this is mainly because there are more products available for men and also more advertising.

Do you think that being in the public eye makes you more aware of the need to look good?
No I’ve always been fussy about my appearance especially my hair. I like nice clothes and I have got a fetish for shoes. When I’m training and being a hermit I don’t bother so much so I tend to have stubble and longer hair but it drives me mad!

Do you have a specific grooming routine that you do daily and if so what products do you use?
I don’t really have a daily routine, the way I take care of my skin really just centres around shaving. The only products I can use on my skin are Dermalogica as I have sensitive skin. Their products do not affect me and also help with my shaving bumps and ingrowing hairs. I also use DAX on my hair to keep it in place and it also gives a nice shine.

How often do you wash shave etc and with what?
I shower twice a day with sensitive shower gel and apply 50/50 mix to my skin (liquid parffin/white soft paraffin) I shave about every 2-3 days and also exfoliate with dermalogica face scrub and then apply post balm.

What is your favourite fragrance and how long have you worn it?
My latest discovery is Million by Paco Rabanne and my old time favourite would have to be Issey Miyake.

Do you have products that you borrow form your wife/ girlfriend?
I hate to have dry lips so I use Carmex but pinch my girlfriends Cymex if I can’t find it. I have also been known to steal my sisters Dermalogica daily resurfacers too to cleanse my face.

Do you buy products yourself?
No the three women in my life do that – Mum, sister and girlfriend.

What other guys in the public eye do you think are well groomed?
David Beckham always seems to get it right.

What does well groomed mean to you?
Well groomed to me means fresh trim, neat eyebrows and well pressed clothes and clean footwear.
