‘We are in the sun so often…so I need to look after my skin!’
Lancashire born James Anderson soon discovered at Burnley Cricket club that he could bowl faster than the rest, and a debut with Lancashire and an England call up soon followed. His chiselled looks and brilliance on the pitch may have drawn comparisons with David Beckham, but it’s his sheer force of character that makes him one of our most exciting cricketers.
His outgoing personality has seen him pose naked for Attitude magazine, his sense of style has seen him team up with Chess London on a smart line of clobber and most importantly his determination has seen him move from career-halting injury to a return to top form. Thanks James for dropping buy to talk ice baths, recovery shakes and massages!
Do you think more men are making an effort with their appearance, if so why?
I’m not sure to be honest, I think some guys do and some don’t. I guess I’ve always been a bloke who tries to make an effort.
Do you have a grooming routine?
I don’t have much of a routine as such but because we are in the sun so much, I do need to look after my skin. I love the Wellman Skin Technology for Men range, and especially the face moisturiser as it keeps my skin refreshed, energised and protected!
What’s your secret to looking good and feeling great – does it start from the inside if so do exercise and the right diet have a part to play, and how?
To be honest I’m not sure I always look great, but as a professional sportsman I always have to watch what I eat and how I train. It’s my aim to play for as long as I can, so these things are really crucial.
Does looking good as a sportsmen play a part in help you to perform?
No! Don’t be daft!
How do you prepare pre match?
We always train a couple of days before a match and that’s a standard routine. On the morning of a match I try to eat well and hydrate my body. Mentally I also need to prepare, and then just before the start we do our warm ups.
How do you freshen up after competing?
Nowadays it’s all about ice baths, recovery shakes and massages. The massages and shakes are good, but not the ice baths! We play a lot so we need to recover quickly.
Who cuts your hair , how often and how do you style it?
I travel all the time with cricket and like getting my hair cut regularly, so it’s cut by different people all the time. Just depends where I am. But I do use Gladstone Grooming when I’m in Manchester. They are also an old fashioned barbers.
Have you ever borrowed any products from the women in your life, if so what?
Only lip balm, once.
Your heading away for the weekend, whats in your wash bag?
I’ll take some shampoo, my toothbrush and toothpaste, the Wellman Moisturiser and Face Wash and some deodorant.
Have you ever had a grooming disaster?
Shaving all my hair off in South Africa once was not one of my better decisions.
Who would you name as your style icon? Which other cricketers do you feel are well turned out?
A few of the England cricketers think they are pretty stylish…I’m not so sure.
