‘Ice cold baths shock my muscles back to life!’

Dapper Ugo Monye doesn’t hang about! After attending Lord Wandsworth College this Islington native was soon snapped up by the Harlequins U19 coach, he was quickly offered a contract and within 12 months he was a member of the England Sevens!

Here at The Grooming Guide we like the fact that when this for the Harlequins wing/center isn’t ‘hanging’ with his Olympian pals Mark Lewis-Francis & Tyrone Edgar he makes sure that his feet are firmly on the ground by teaching Bible classes. Now that Mr Monye is the new face (and body!) of Molton Brown’s Sport collection we reckon that he’s well placed to give a real mans take on grooming. Thanks Ugo!

Now you are the new face (and body) of Molton Brown’s Sport collection, are you feeling the pressure to look good?
Well, it’s hugely exciting as I’ve always been a big fan of Molton Brown but I always try to take care in my appearance. I’m having a lot of fun but happily I don’t feel any additional pressure to look my best.

Has your approach to grooming changed at all?
As I’ve become older I’ve become more interested in grooming and now it’s firmly part of my daily routine. So no matter where I am or what I’m doing, I always moisturise and looking after my skin is crucial.

Rugby can be a dirty game, how do you stay fresh?
Rugby is such a physically demanding sport that a good anti-perspirant is key. After the game, I take a short, sharp plunge in an ice cold bath to shock my muscles back to life!

Bath or shower and with what?
It depends – it’s usually a shower before and after training but when I’m at home nothing beats a long soak. In the shower, I’ve always used Molton Brown’s Re-charge Black Pepper but in the bath I am a big fan of bath salts, especially Molton Brown’s Seamoss Stress Relieving Hydrosoak.

Do the products you use change throughout the year?
A good moisturiser for the face is alway something I spend money on and I’m a fan of Clarins. Training outside in winter can be tough so I tend to use body lotions to lock in moisture and prevent dryness.

Do you have a signature scent?
I’m currently wearing Black Orchid by Tom Ford which is a firm favourite. I’ve also recently started using Molton Brown’s Mahina fine fragrance which is really fresh and light.

What’s your favourite smell on others?
Molecule 01 at Harvey Nichols as it’s velvety and woody but crucially the scent varies depending on the wearer.

So you’re stuck on a desert island which one product will get you through?
A strong sunscreen – no contest.

Aside from exercise do you take care of your body?
Well every 2-3 days I’ll use a scrub to clear dead skin and after training I’ll use the Body-Warming Sportbalm from Molton Brown’s Sport Collection I’ll rub into my muscles and it has a fantastic fiery kick!

Where do you have your haircut? What products do you use to maintain your style? If I want something quick and easy I’ll go the barbers, however, if I want something more stylised I’ll visit Aveda.

Is there one treatment you keep going back to?
Wearing rugby boots destroys your feet so every now and again I’ll have a pedicure.

Which other guys do you think look good?
I think Pharrell Williams has a real unique style and I like how creative he is both musically and in the way he dresses. For classic grooming David Gandy can do no wrong.

Lastly have you any suffered any grooming disasters?
Yes and only about 3 months ago! I went through a stage of peroxiding my hair (to give it a red flash at the front) and one night I overdid it. I woke to find a clump of hair had fallen out. Never again!

‘I’m 6ft 2 so baths are usually too small for me’

Former Scotland International and Wasps team member Rugby star Thom Evans, 27, may have left the pitch but he hasn’t stopped achieving! Since his retirement he has both featured as a studio analyst for the 2010 Rugby World Cup and also embarked on a career in athletics. With big hopes to become part of team for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Thom may once again be competing for his country.

You will recognise Thom’s well honed physique but have you noticed his immaculate grooming? We have! Here Thom shares his tips to looking good and the products he needs to achieve this. No doubt taking his cue from his suave style icons Thom is always a gentleman and this even extends to sharing his razor and tweezers with glamorous girlfriend, model Kelly Brook. Thanks Thom!

What does well-groomed mean to you?
To be clean and healthy and well presented.

What’s your daily grooming routine?
I have a shower, apply some moisturizer and then my roll on under the arms. I then apply my aftershave and get dressed and I’m ready to go.

What’s your favourite skincare product and why?
No7 Protect & Perfect Day Cream. I love this product because it gives your skin a real glow.

Whatare your favourite fragrances, on you and others?
Valentino for Men aftershave. I think it may have been discontinued so I have stocked up well. It’s a pretty unique smell which always generates complments. On women my favourite has to be Fracas de Robert Piguet as my partner wears it and I can’t stop smelling her!

You have recently been on holiday, do you protect your skin in the sun?
Yes. I also spend a lot of time outside playing golf so it’s important for me to always use a cream with a high SPF.

Bath or shower?
Shower. I am 6ft 2 and baths are usually too small for me.

Do you think it’s more acceptable for men to look after their appearance?
Definately, guys like Tom Ford and David Beckham have made it fashionable for men to care about their appearance.

Do you borrow any products from your partner and if so which ones?
She always uses my stuff!!! Usually razors and tweezers go missing, then she denies it! She has so many lotions and potions I wouldn’t even know what they were for….!?

What are your tips for revitalising tired muscles?
I rub oil into my legs every night for 20 minutes while I’m sprint training. Epsom salt baths are also good.

Are you more conscious of your appearance since being in the public eye and if so, how?
Kelly’s friend introduced me to Larry King at Daniel Hersherson to sort my barnet out, but that’s as far as it goes.

Which guys do you think always get it right in terms of grooming and looking great?
David Gandy always looks well put together whenever we see him. Good looking chap with great taste.

Who are you all time style and grooming icons and why?
Marlon Brando was a cool guy. I just met Franco Nero at the Ischia Global Film Festival and he is the coolest dude I have met; he’s still got it.

‘I only take 20 mins to get ready in the morning – that might surprise some people!’

Captivating audiences has always come easy to Mark Wright and since ‘graduating’ from ITV2’s The Only Way Is Essex his star has continued to ascend. He now presents ‘ Take Me Out’ spin-off show ‘Take Me Out – The Gossip’ and has also starred in his own reality show ‘Mark Wrights Hollywood Nights’ which followed him and his friends throughout the USA.

Fit, healthy and always groomed within an inch of his life we thought that Mark (or just ‘Wrighty’ to his friends here at The Grooming Guide) was the perfect source for tips on looking good and feeling great. So if you really want to know what the ‘Wright’ way is when it comes to tanning and waxing……read on!

How would define your style Mark?
It’s smart, classic and dapper.

Do you think it’s changed since you’ve become famous?
I’ve definitely watched what I wear more because of being photographed so much, but honestly ever since I was young I’ve always liked the classic and smart look.

How do you get ready in the mornings and how long does it take?
Not long at all (which might surprise some people) I only take 20mins! I have a shower, using Mint Original Source Shower Gel and Herbal Essences Shampoo. I then blow dry my hair using American Crew Fiber to style it. Finally, I moisturise using Sisley men’s range and then just splash on some aftershave ( my own Mr Wright) and I’m good to go.

Have you ever waxed?
I got my chest waxed once by a friend who is a beautician and I had two strips done and let’s just say I would never do it again!

When it comes to tanning are you a real guy, or do you like to fake it?
I’ve never used fake tan in my life, I’ll always try and go with the natural…it’s a good excuse for holidays.

Do you ever have a massage or a facial?
Yes, I’ve had a few massages in my time but I’m yet to try a facial.

Do you have a signature fragrance?
Yes, I actually have. I have my own! I launched Mr and Mrs Wright in October last year, I was heavily involved in the full process and really enjoyed it. It was a great experience selecting the fragrances and now I love what we created so much that I wear it all the time.

You’re in great shape, do you have a trainer?
I don’t have a trainer but I do go to the gym every day and train myself.

So are you careful about what you eat?
Yes, I’m really careful, I always try to be as healthy as possible but I also love my junk food, I just have to make sure to have it in moderation!

Are you someone who worries about the ageing process?
To be honest I don’t really think about it! Actually, I love George Clooney’s look, so if that’s anything to go by I am not afraid. It’s easier for men to face aging process than women, don’t you think?

Would you ever try Botox or go under the knife?
I’ve never thought about it and it really doesn’t appeal.

When you were in LA did you notice a big difference in Californian’s men style to yours?
Definitely, American men are much more casual but they take grooming and pride in their appearance to a new level.

What would be your one desert island grooming product that you couldn’t live without?
It would have to be lip balm.

Who cuts your hair?
My local barbers Chigwell Barbers cut my hair. Iv’e been going there since I was a little boy.

Lastly would you say that you were vain about your appearance?
I wouldn’t say I was vain but I take pride in my appearance, but I also love days when I can relax and wear my scruffs.

‘I hate over-grooming – as far as I’m concerned, men should look like men’

Elusive. Original. Eccentric. These are the most common adjectives found used to describe the designer behind the eponymous label A.Sauvage. Starting in 2010, the definitive aesthetic and signature silohuette behind his suits were instantly received by the fashion world, and as they say, the rest is history. But Sauvage himself is something of an enigma. So when The Grooming Guide got talking to the man of mystery, we took up the opportunity to find out exactly what makes him tick…

Do you let a barber take creative control of your hair/beard, or do you prefer DIY? Has that always been the case?
I’m DIY all the way, from design to personal maintenance. I haven’t been to a barber in years… I guess perhaps I’m a bit of a control freak.

Do you trust hair products specifically aimed for Afro hair or not? If so, which ones?
Totally, but unfortunately they’re difficult to locate in Mayfair. White hair products don’t work on Afro hair and they’re never going to… I’m still waiting for my ‘Herbal Essences moment’ but I suspect it’s going to be a long time coming.

Where do you draw the line between ‘looking after yourself’ and over-grooming?
I hate over-grooming – as far as I’m concerned, men should look like men. When my girlfriend starts staring at me, I know I’ve gone too far.

Are there any style trends right now out there, that make you think ‘I want nothing to do with that’?
Sneaker heels, though I obviously don’t wear a lot of other heels.

Do you take baths? If so, should more guys admit to doing so? What do you use?
I bath everyday using lavender oil – Liberty sell a really good one. There’s nothing wrong with guys taking baths, I don’t know why anyone would be embarrassed about it.

Name 5 products that have been in your wash-bag for over 5 years?
Kiehl’s gave me a complimentary wash-bag a while ago and I’ve been buying their products ever since. I don’t go looking for products but once they become part of my routine, I’d rather repeat purchase than shop around – I think it’s the same for most guys. My wash-bag contains Kiehl’s ‘Ultimate Man’ Body Scrub Soap, Crème de Corps, Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Energizing Scrub, Kieh’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Cleanser and Kyoku Oil Control Lotion. A friend introduced me to the moisturizer.

Who are your most unlikely style icons, living or dead?
YSL, Andy Warhol, Le Corbusier and Magritte.

Your first campaign, ‘Natives’, features Venice Beach skaters and LA locals . And then the second part of the campaign was ‘Captains’ shot in London featuring local heroes and celebrities from the scene here. Where do you take your inspiration from lately?
Design inspiration is always drawn from my native country Ghana, an influence that runs from print and pattern to cloth, production methods and pattern cut. For my next photography project, however, I’m looking to Hong Kong as I think the visual juxtaposition of Asia and Africa will be extremely interesting.

This Is Not A Suit film being shortlisted for the Sundance Film Festival was another campaign of yours that made waves, casting The Designer as something of a scientist. How would you apply your ‘Dress Easy’ principle to men’s grooming?
D.E. means minimum effort for maximum results, the simplest course of action, comfort and versatility. If something doesn’t come naturally or work for your lifestyle, you shouldn’t be doing it… The ethos pervades all areas of my life so my grooming routine doesn’t have ten steps requiring twenty products,… it’s quick, easy, enjoyable and effective.

You chose Mos Def/Yassin Bey for your Spring 2012 campaign. Who’s your pick for best-groomed man on the planet?
I spend a lot of time looking at men’s clothes and men wearing clothes but I don’t look at men that closely.

Finally, do you have a signature fragrance?
I actually have two: Dior Ambre Nuit and Dior Oud Ispahan. I like to keep your nose on its toes.

“I have been known to nick my sister’s moisturiser”

A keen supporter of both his home town club Peterborough United as well as Chelsea Luke Pasqualino started his acting career by attending drama classes at Stamford Art Centre and was soon catapulted to fame playing Freddie McClair in the teen drama Skins.Varied roles have seen 22 year old Luke, appearing in Casualty and also the BBC comedy Miranda.

With his career going from strength to strength in July 2012 Pasqualino starred with Jessica Szohr in the Werewolf Romantic Comedy film Love Bite and the same year was announced to star in the Ensemble Thriller film Snow Piercer. Here he shares his tips on no-fuss grooming and looking good whenever……wherever!

Do you think that guys are paying more attention to their appearance and if so why?
Yes definitely. It’s good to take pride in how we look, I suppose this might depend on your line of work and what’s required. But most guys want to look good to attract the ladies!

Do you think that being in the public eye makes you even more aware you need to look good?
Yes it really does, if I am attending meetings, castings and stuff I have to make sure I am presented in a certain way. I like to make sure I’m looking especially good if a fan asks to have a picture taken with me when I’m out and about…

Do you have a specific grooming routine that you do daily and if so what products do you use?
I shower daily and wash my hair and use dermalogica products on my skin and bedhead for styling my hair. I also like to have a steam/sauna once or twice a week too after a workout.

How often do you have to shave?
I make sure to have a proper shave around once or twice a week….

Bath or shower?
Definitely a shower 100%, I don’t like the thought of laying in dirty water in a bath.

What is your favourite fragrance and how long have you worn it?
I don’t stick to one aftershave I mix it up, my favourites are Armani Code, Paco Rabanne Ultra Violet, and Gucci. I like fragrances that are light and fresh and not too heavy and overpowering.

Do you have products that you borrow from your girlfriend?
No as I don’t have one! But I have sometimes been known to borrow my sisters moisturiser. Ha!

Do you buy products yourself?
Yes I tend to buy my dermalogica products in bulk and then top up on items when I’m running low, and in town.

What other guys in the public eye do you think are well groomed?
George Lamb, David Beckham and Ashton Kutcher all make an effort.

What does well groomed mean to you?
Looking good, having fresh skin, being well presented, but without looking like you have tried too hard and are overgroomed!

“It’s simple…when you look good you feel good.”

Amir Khan, 24, is the reigning WBA world light-welterweight champion and 2004 Olympic silver medalist. Humble and family orientated, away from the cameras he is regarded as boxing’s next superstar. A proud fan of his hometown club Bolton Wanderers, Amir is often a regular at the Reebok stadium where he cheers his team on. After his successful title defence in Las Vegas last December against the hard-hitting Marcos Maidana, ‘King’ Khan is now aiming to unify his division should he overcome the undefeated Irishman Paul McCloskey on April 16 at the M.E.N Arena.

As a sportsman you obviously take care of your body. How do you take care of your face?

I obviously train regularly. Aside from that my main focus is concentrating on not being hit in the face during a fight.

Do you have a grooming routine?

No, I don’t have a routine as much. After a fight I will clean up with a long hot bath followed by a shower. I shave once a week at least, and again if there is a special occasion.

What are your favourite products?

I use Clinique For Men skin products and Dax Wax on my hair. They both do the job.

Do you have a signature aftershave?

I really like Comme des Garcons.

What does being well groomed mean to you?

It’s simple isn’t it. When you look good, you feel good.

‘I’ve never felt that my appearance should be the main thing for which I’m recognised.’

Wretch 32, born Jermaine Sinclair, burst onto the music scene in 2007 with his collection of mix tapes which consequently caught the attention of BBC Radio 1. Known for being one of the pioneers that brought grime music to the mainstream, Wretch has gone on to win four Urban Music Awards and this year, picked up a BET award for Best International Act in 2012.

Not one to miss an opportunity, Wretch was an instrumental part in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympics penning a song for Adidas which was used in their ad campaign. Here at The Grooming Guide we know Wretch for his sharp style and we are happy he dropped by to share his tips on health, grooming and why it’s never a good idea to go to Tescos in your pyjamas.

So when it comes to grooming what does it for you?
I like simple and natural products but above all I make sure I steam-wash my face in the shower. For my skin I use Palmers Cocoa Butter and when I freshening up I reach for Calvin Klein Shower Gel.

How do you like to smell?
Well, right now I’m wearing Tom Ford. I wear fragrances from Jean-Paul Gautier and Ralph Lauren too but it really depends what I’m wearing and also how I’m feeling. When I’m wearing red I reach for something sporty from Ralph Lauren, and if Im looking particularly suave Tom Ford does the job.

Has the way you look changed now you are in the public eye?
Well….only in the sense that I wouldn’t just run to Tesco in my pyjamas! It has made me more conscious of my appearance.

You recently wrote a track and fronted a campaign supporting the 2012 Olympics. Do you play any sport yourself?
Yeah, I play football quite a bit! I play for a local team in Tottenham and we try and play every Wednesday but saying that I haven’t played for the past three weeks!

How important do you think it is for a man to keep himself well groomed and why
Sure it’s important but I’ve have never felt that my appearance should be the sole thing for which I’m recognised. Generally I do think that certain pressures are making men more aware of their appearance and their grooming habits.

Being a musician must mean a lot of late nights spent in the studio. What products keep you looking and staying fresh?
I have known people to use eye-drops a lot after late nights but I tend to stay away from them. If it’s been a very long night then I’ll just whack a pair of shades!

Where do you get your hair done and what style do you prefer?
I get my hair done by One Level Barbers by the same guy every time, roughly every three days. He could probably do it with his eyes closed!

Who would you say are your musical influences and how do they inspire you?
I have quite a few! Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Coldplay, Jay-Z, Kanye. I think each in their own right push the boundaries of their expectations for their genre.

Have you suffered any grooming-related disasters in the past?
Funny you should say that because I ripped my trousers the other night while attending a fundraising event hosted by Elton John. I jumped on stage and didn’t even realise until I came off!

‘My hair is my security blanket, I never go anywhere without it’

Tyler James likes his style done properly and he won’t take short cuts. We respect a man who takes his tailoring seriously- what more can you expect from a man who sticks to classic Soul in an industry where vapid electronic music has taken over? Tyler James is a man who knows the difference between fashion and style, just like he knows the difference between a grower and a certified hit. Now signed to Universal/Island Records, if you last saw him appearing in BBC One’s The Voice with Will.I.Am as his mentor, and now he’s back from his sold-out tour to kick butts and take names. We spoke to him about why he favours The Krays and why he’ll never go bald…

You’re not afraid of a strong look. So far we’ve seen Burberry prints, pocket squares, Pompadour quiff. Is there anything you would shy away from?
I do love to look like a proper gentleman, proper dapper! It’s especially good for when you’re feeling rubbish, just like if a girl is having a crap day she puts on a nice dress and feels better. I love a pocket squares! I would never wear jeans, if I’m honest at the moment I don’t even own any jeans!

What’s your daily maintenance routine? And what do you do when you’re making an effort?
I guess my hair is pretty high-maintenance as it takes a while. I’ll wash my hair and blow-dry it, then paste it and finish with hair spray and use a round hair brush. Sometimes I’ll use hair powder as it makes my hair stand up without looking greasy. I also have quite oily skin so I use Dermalogica products. I do have to be careful as when I don’t look after my skin…well it’s just not pretty!

Kano features on the track, he has own look with the closely-shaven hairstyle. Would you for a close-crop or even go bald?
Never! My hair is my security blanket, I would never go anywhere without it.

What do you like girls to do in order to look after themselves?
I reckon girls tend to look better without make-up on. I get if a girl’s going out and she wants to change it up, she’ll put eye make-up on and that’s fine. I do like this Rockabilly/vintage trend that girls are doing lately, basically whenever a girl looks comfortable, she looks good!

Have you ever had any grooming mistakes or style disasters?
The only thing that happens occasionally, is with my moustache. I like to have it as I look like a little boy without it and if I trim my beard on a level 1 and not on a level 2, I’m done for!

Finally, who is your pick for best dressed man out at the moment?
Mark Ronson always looks good, but if I had to emulate somebody it would have to be someone from the Rat Pack.

His hit single ‘Worry About You’ and album ‘A Place I Go’ are out now.

“An SPF is vital when I’m filming in Benidorm!”

You may not know that Jake Canuso started his working life as a dancer….That career lasted nearly two decades and saw seen him perform, choreograph and tour the world with some of the world’s biggest recording artists including Annie Lennox, Take That, Elton John and The Spice Girls.

Over recent years Jake has flourished in the acting arena having built up an extensive CV appearing in films such as Fly Boys (MGM), Russian Dolls (Lunar Films), City Rats (Urban Way Productions) and most recently Nine (The Weinstein Co/Sony Pictures) with Daniel Day Lewis and Judi Dench. Although his television credits also include, Hustle, Shameless and Casualty Jake is perhaps best known for his role in ITV1’s hit comedy Benidorm! Here Jake tells us how he manages to keep it clean and fresh even when he is oiled up on a Spanish beach, starring as loveable rogue Matteo!

Do you think more guys are into grooming and looking good, why do you think that is?
Yes, because images in the media these days mainly tend to celebrate the well groomed man as opposed to ridiculing them. Also there are more places for men to get help with male grooming; years ago a guy might have felt self conscious going for a facial but with male only grooming salons such as The Refinery in London it’s no longer a problem.

Being in the public eye do you have to make more effort?
I have always had a pretty healthy diet, done sports and looked after my skin so I don’t think I’ve changed my grooming routine much since I’ve been more in the public eye. But if I have a photo shoot or filming an important scene I’ll usually drink lots of water and try and get a bit more sleep the night before.

What guys in the public eye get it right…and wrong?
I think the guys that get it right look well groomed with in individual style. Men like Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt spring to mind. The ones who get it wrong; orange faced, over plucked, fake looking guys on reality tv shows.

How often do you you get your hair cut? What do you use to style it and how does it work for you?
About once a month. My hair is naturally very wavy so there are only certain products that work for me. I use Tigi Bed Head B For Men. Their pure texture moulding paste combed through wet hair really controls the wave.

How often do you shave and with what?
My skin can be quite sensitive so I don’t like to shave too often and generally use a beard trimmer. If I need a close shave for work the products that work for my skin are from the Dermalogica Shave range. I use their Close Shave Oil to avoid nicks or redness, then I follow with the essential Post Shave Balm which cools and really reduces discomfort.

Do you have a daily grooming routine, what products do you use on your skin?
In this job, its really important to take care of your skin, especially with the launch of HD! Even guys can’t get away with anything now. Dermalogica works for me, I use the soap-free foaming Special Cleansing Gel (great in the shower!); exfoliate with the skin brightening Daily Microfoliant and finish with the Active Moist moisturiser. The Total Eye Care Eye Cream (SPF15) is vital when I am filming in Benidorm.

Do you buy products?
Yes, although if anyone wants to send me some for free it would be rude to turn them down.

Do you borrow products from your partner/wife?
No, I’m very self sufficient!

What is your favourite aftershave? Are you loyal to one or a few if so what are they?
Esencia by Loewe. I’ve used it for 22 years and Harrods in London is the only place in London I can find it. Luckily when Im working in Spain it’s readily available and I can stock up.

What does being well groomed mean to you?
It’s not what others may think of me but more how I feel about myself. As long as I feel great I’m happy, if others think I look good too that’s just a bonus.
