Do you have a daily grooming routine?
Apart from making sure my stubble is under control and putting on a bit of moisturizer, so not really to be honest. That said, I can’t start my day without washing my hair so I do it every morning.
Have you ever been part of the beard gang and if not why not?
No, I don’t think it would suit me. I used to be always clean shaven, it’s just easier when filming for continuity but now I wear light stubble.
Wet blade or electric shave and why?
I tidy up my neck area with a wet blade, coming to just above my Adam’s apple. From there up I use an electric shaver to trim to the desired length.
Do you have facials and body treatments if so what and where?
Occasionally I’ll go for a facial for a deep cleanse. No matter how many mud masks I try at home nothing beats letting a professional loose on your face for an hour to make you feel rejuvenated. I love massages and because I work out in the gym regularly, I try to get one in every month.
Do you spa?
Do I what? YES! a trip to a spa is the ultimate indulgence for me (next to a big slap up meal with friends).
Who cuts your hair and what are your moisturizer products to style it?
Christian Shannon in Brown Sugar in Dublin has cut my hair for the past six or seven years now. I fly back to Dublin just to get my hair cut sometimes. He’s a talented guy who knows what he’s doing. I’ve got very thick hair and a double crown which apparently means it’s tough to cut my hair but Christian always does a super job. Actually, I recently had my hair styled (not cut) by Cristiano Ronaldo’s stylist while I was hosting London Fashion Week Festival. My favourite hair products are VO5 clay putty and I’ve also started using new British styling brand Mojo Hair. Their fibre shaper is excellent.
Have other guys (real or fictional) influenced the way you groom?
I really know a lot about other guys grooming routines but guys like Don Draper and of course James Dean always offer up inspiration.
What’s the one product that you cannot live without?
My Chanel Blue travel spray aftershave. It comes everywhere with me.
Tell us a secret… what’s your guilty grooming pleasure? Are there any grooming/beauty products that you are not so up front about using?
I recently worked with MAC at London and Paris Men’s fashion week and discovered their Prep + Prime Oil stick. It’s an oil but in a solid stick form. It works wonders for the under-eye area. I mix it with my regular moisturizer once a week for a really smooth and refreshed feeling. It’s also a super convenient size for traveling and fits easily into my wash bag.
You’ve been in the public eye for some time, how much has your styling and grooming evolved?
It hasn’t changed much. I’m a pretty low-maintenance guy and need to be able to get up and go quickly.
Have you ever had a grooming disaster?
Shaving my chest hair I nearly de-nippled myself!!!
How long does it take you to get ready in the morning and what’s your routine?
Shower, shave, dry and style hair. Slap on some moisturizer and perhaps a little eye gel. A spritz of aftershave and I’m done in under 15 minutes usually.
How do you stay fresh and looking good?
A healthy body and a healthy mind are key. I think the most important factors are what you’re eating. I try to keep it relatively balanced. It doesn’t always work but I try!
What smell do you like on yourself and on others?
I love Chanel Bleu. It’s my go to. I also recently discovered Black Phantom by Kilian. It’s a sophisticated new gourmand-woodsy fragrance created by Kilian Hennessy who worked with Sidonie Lancesseur to create an Irish coffee with a twist by replacing the traditional whiskey with the liquor of the pirates; rum.
Are you loyal or promiscuous with scent?
Loyal. It takes a lot for me to wear something new.
You love a #sixtysecondstyle… What’s are your top tips for the busy man, who wants to have an effective routine?
Keep it simple and don’t over-complicate things. Life’s complicated enough so your grooming routine shouldn’t be.
What’s in your washbag?
Toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, Chanel Bleu Travel Spray, Tom Ford Neroli Portofino Deodorant Stick, nail clippers, wax putty, hair pomade, Bumble & Bumble Grooming Crème and a comb.
