‘I prefer Mr Matey because I’m so mature!’

With a career as a professional sportsman, Ashley Mckenzie knows how important it is to take care of himself. Few could have missed his charge for the Men’s 60Kg judo category in this years Olympics. If that wasn’t enough, fans of Celebrity Big Brother would have seen him progress to the final of this years series. Here Ashley takes a few minutes out of his busy schedule to share with us his tips on staying fresh, looking great and why Mr Matey floats his grooming boat!

As a sportsman you take care of your body, do you take the same for your face?
Yes I do. I use Palmer’s Cocoa Butter everywhere, on my hands, body and even my face!

Your hands must take quite a pounding?
They do, so I use copious amounts of tape and keep the dead skin at bay by creaming them regularly.

Which grooming products can you not live without and why?
Palmers Cocoa Butter. My skin would be so dry otherwise. I reckon all the scented body creams from The Body Shop are wicked. Also, Adee Phelan’s men’s product range it smells pretty decent and are the products are easy to use.

What is your favourite aftershave?
1 Million by Paco Rabanne.

Do you have a regular shaving routine?
No, I don’t know how to shave! I think I need a lesson because I always cut myself and come out in bumps, then it’s like a scene from Home Alone…. arghhhh! I’ve recently started using Ren Shaving Oil and After-Shave Balm and they are definitely helping.

Before a match, how do you prepare yourself?
It’s pointless having a massive grooming regime before I compete as I’m all hot and sweaty within minutes but I, of course, shower and use lots of deodorant. Sure Cool Blue for men works well.

How do you freshen up after a competition?
As I obviously sweat so much when I compete, I cleanse thoroughly. I use Original Source Tea Tree and Mint Shower Gel, that tingly feeling is nice. Head and Shoulders to wash the sweat and dirt out of my hair and Neutrogena Invigorating Daily Scrub which also has a mad tingly feeling.

Bath or shower: which do you prefer and what products do you use?
Shower if I’m in a rush and bath if I have the time. I prefer a bath and use Mr Matey because I’m so mature!

Have you ever had a grooming disaster?
I was away for a competition and had an afro at the time and decided I should get it braided before competing. They did it so tight I was in agony so I had to take it out and take painkillers. I had a mad afro when I finally stepped on to the mat!

Who in the public eye do you think always gets it right in terms of style and grooming?
Obviously Beckham! My new hair style was actually done by the same hairdresser, Adee Phelan, who created David’s iconic mohican haircut.

Who are your all time style icons and why?
Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather due to the fact that I reckon he’s got mad swag. I get told my style is quite American and so guys like him and Kanye West have a slight influence on my fashion tastes.

Where would you like to be in ten years time?
Hopefully retired and with a Judo Academy up and running. Also an Olympic Gold medal hanging on the mantlepiece would be nice!
