The Barber – Alfred Dunhill’s Bourdon House

‘traditional treatment with a modern touch’

Any gentleman worth his salt is familiar with Alfred Dunhill’s attention to fine detail. But how many of us knew that this signature could also extend to a classic cut-throat wet shave or haircut? Infact The Barber at Alfred Dunhill forms part of the considered service offered at Bourdon House in Mayfair, and located next to the Discovery Room on the first floor, it is a unique bastion of male indulgence. There is nothing quite like relaxing in a barbershop chair (covered in Dunhill’s traditional leather) whilst watching a classic movie on a personal TV screen to take the pain out of getting a haircut! Throw in a barber Jay Anaya with 20 years of experience, that show as he begins snipping, and I am instantly set at ease.

Surely if there is a moment to visit The Barber at Alfred Dunhill then it’s now? Young guys have never wanted their hair to look so ‘old’, whether seeking inspiration from Eddie Redmayne in Birdsong, the recent Louis Vuitton AW12 show, or even the city cuts of the 1980’s, classic cuts rule. Where Jay succeeds at Bourdon House is by cleverly blurring the lines between corporate and edgy, this means that his customers include guys in their early 20’s as well as the usual banking suspects and Mayfair residents. They all share a love of luxury as well as a respect for the trend driven quality they have come to expect from Dunhill.

Worlds away from the ‘one cut suits all’ approach of my local barbers Jay actually takes time to listen to his customer and how I want to wear my hair. Knowing from experience that most guys want to be smarter during the week and freer at the weekend, he melds this knowledge with traditional barbering skills and current trends to create a hairstyle to suit my lifestyle and personality! He uses products from D R Harris, Kevin Murphy, Kerestase and Redken and tailors them to my hair and scalp type, and as a result my hair looks fuller, healthier and distinctly ‘undressed’ When I leave and Jay explains that ‘it’s the cut that makes the style’ and not the product, and I finally get it. As I look forward to my first product free weekend, I find his words are still ringing in my ears…..’let your hair chill!’
